Rock of the Year 2012

Germans name Quartzite Rock of the Year 2012

Every year since 2007 the Germans have named a Rock of the Year. In 2007 it was granite, in 2008 sandstone, followed by basalt, limestone and, last year, tuff. This year the honour goes to quartzite. Quartzite is a metamorphic rock, altered from siliceous sandstone or grit under increased temperature and pressure. The sandstone grains recrystallise during either thermal or regional metamorphism, causing them to interlock more strongly and form a dense, strong rock. The hardness of this rock often makes itself known geomorphologically by forming ridges in the landscape. One very good example is the Teufelsmauer (devil’s wall) on the northern boundary of the Harz Mountains in Germany.

Steno's birthday

Nicolas Steno (Danish: Niels Stensen), a Danish scientist, anatomist and geological pioneer, was born on 11 January 1638 and died on 5 December 1686. He is widely regarded as the father of stratigraphy.

Steno observed that streams spread across their floodplains during high water events, covering them with a layer of sediment and burying any organisms living there. Renewed flooding produced further layers of sediment, thus building up a sequence superposed on the lower strata. He is credited as formulating three of the defining principles of stratigraphy: the law of superposition discussed above: '...at the time when any given stratum was being formed, all the matter resting upon it was fluid, and, therefore, at the time when the lower stratum was being formed, none of the upper strata existed'; the principle of original horizontality: 'Strata either perpendicular to the horizon or inclined to the horizon were at one time parallel to the horizon', i.e. sediment particles are deposited according to the law of gravity; the principle of lateral continuity: 'Material forming any stratum were continuous over the surface of the Earth unless some other solid bodies stood in the way'. Steno's theory that fossils represented a chronological record of different living creatures in different eras was a pivotal to Darwin's theory of natural selection.

A fourth principle, known as Steno's law, or Steno's law of the constancy of interfacial angles, states that the angles of intersection of equivalent crystal faces remain the same for all specimens of the same mineral, a fundamental breakthrough which was the prerequisite for all subsequent investigations into crystal structure. He also postulated that mineral crystals are built up of identical building blocks.

Fossils of the Hunsrück Slate

NEW PUBLICATION: FOSSILIEN IM HUNSRÜCK-SCHIEFER

The Hunsrück Schiefer (a slate, also known as the Hunsrück Slate) of Germany, laid down at approximately 400 Ma in the Devonian sea, is one of the world's foremost fossil Lagerstätten.

The slate fossils of the Hunsrück are well known for their exceptionally good and optically pleasing state of preservation, often being pyritised. In addition to their high scientific value, the aesthetic appeal is equally as important.

The Bonn palaeontologists Gabriele Kühl and Jes Rust, together with Christoph Bartels from the German Mining Museum (Deutsche Bergbaumuseum) and Derek Briggs from Yale University, have compiled an impressive illustrated book with the title 'Fossilien im Hunsrück-Schiefer' (Fossils of the Hunsrück Slate). On its 120 pages it provides information on find locations and the organisms represented, in addition to the numerous photographs.

The book is published by Verlag Quelle & Meyer and has the ISBN 978-3-494-01483-8 and can be had for €24.95 in bookshops.

PS. I should point out that the book is in German, although it may still be of interest to non-speakers based on the photographs and illustrations alone.

A short note on German mining schools

Just as an aside, Bergkamen once had a mining school. I was lucky enough to visit Bergkamen mining school in 1998, as it was being wound up. A lot of German mining schools in the Rhine/Ruhr region closed down during the 1990s/early 2000s as coal mining became uneconomical and government subsidies were axed. Most of them had their own, very extensive, mineral collections. When I visited Bergkamen I asked what would happen to the school's collection. I was given a large cardboard box and told to help myself. The remainder of the collection was for the skip. (We actually went there because my school, in Freiberg, Saxony, had been offered some of the Berkamen school's collection.) This procedure, bordering on criminal damage, was similar in most of the mining schools that closed down at this time. These German mining schools were generally directly related to the local coal mining industry and were vocational schools, training miners, and should not be confused with places like the Camborne School of Mines.

Japanese volcano Shinmoedake erupts

Actually a couple of days old now, I published this on my geological list on Tuesday.

After keeping quiet for more than 50 years the southern Japanese volcano Shinmoedake makes an impressive comeback.

Shinmoedake (新燃岳) is a volcano in Kyūshū, Japan, and a part of the Kirishima cluster of volcanoes. It is believed to have formed tens of thousands of years ago. Past observed records include eruptions in 1716, 1717, 1771, 1822, 1959, 1991, 2008, and 2009. The latest eruptions began on January 19, 2011, and the alert level was raised to 3 on January 27. Virtual Palaeontology

Wassat?

Simply, the three-dimensional study of fossils within the rock matrix. It allows three-dimensional structures to be studied, including soft tissue, sometimes in great detail. Methods are divided into; physical-optical tomography, using slice images; optical tomography, only available for fossils in translucent materials such as chert and amber; and x-ray computer tomography (CT), which is completely non-destructive. The first two are relatively old and established methods. They always ultimately entail the destruction of the specimen. Using CT, a relatively new method borrowed from medicine, extremely rare specimens can be investigated in astounding detail without destroying the matrix or, more importantly, the fossil.

Here are one or two references:

World's Deepest Black Smokers Found

A number of new black smokers, the deepest yet known, have been discovered by a team of British scientists. The vents are more than three miles deep (5,000 metres) in the Cayman Trough, in the Caribbean. That is nearly half a mile deeper than the previously known deepest vents. Black smokers are undersea volcanic vents, commonly known for their wealth of mineral deposits emplaced by the superheated water being ejected from them. These particular vents are rich in copper and iron ores and were discovered using a deep diving vehicle launched and under remote control from the Royal Research Ship James Cook.

Venus is geologically active

ESA's (European Space Agency) Venus Express has now provided good evidence that Venus remains active geologically. It has identified young lava flows by the unique infrared radiation they emit. This suggests that volcanic eruptions are still possible on the planet.

It has been obvious for a long time that Venus does not have enough craters. Compare the surface of Venus to Mars, the Moon and Mercury, for example. On Venus they have been wiped from the surface over time. The cause is thought to be volcanic activity, but it remained unclear whether this was a fast or a slow process. Does cataclysmic volcanic activity resurface the entire planet with lava, or is a gradual sequence of smaller volcanic eruptions the culprit? These new results suggest the latter case is true.

"Now we have strong evidence right at the surface for recent eruptions," says Sue Smrekar, a scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Die geologischen Streifzüge führen uns u.a. in folgende Gebiete:

- die Wittlicher Senke

- die westliche Vulkaneifel

- die vulkanische Hocheifel

- die Gerolsteiner-Hillesheimer Region

- die Mayen-Laacher Region

THE GEOLOGY OF CHILE

This book is the first comprehensive account in English of the geology of Chile, providing a key reference work that brings together many years of research, and written mostly by Chilean authors from various universities and other centres of research excellence. The 13 chapters begin with a general overview, followed by detailed accounts of Andean tectonostratigraphy and magmatism, the amazingly active volcanism, the world class ore deposits that have proven to be so critical to the welfare of the country, and Chilean water resources. The subject then turns to geophysics with an examination of neotectonics and earthquakes, the hazardous frequency of which is a daily fact of life for the Chilean population. There are chapters on the offshore geology and oceanography of the SE Pacific Ocean, subjects that continue to attract much research not least from those seeking to understand world climatic variations, and on late Quaternary land environments, concluding with an account examining human colonization of southernmost America. The geological evolution of Chile is the c. 550 million year history of a continental margin over 4000 km long. During his voyage on H.M.S. Beagle, an extended visit to Chile (1834-35) had a profound impact on Charles Darwin, especially on his understanding of volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. Over more recent decades scientists have come to recognize the Chilean Andes as providing the classic example of a mountain belt produced by oceanic subduction beneath a continent, as well as some of the most dramatic scenic and climatic variations on Earth. In the final chapter, the editors offer a description of a drive from the Mediterranean landscapes of central Chile to the hyperarid Atacama Desert, a contribution designed to give visitors a chance to experience for themselves the geology and scenery of this extraordinary country.

Schmincke, Hans-Ulrich

The contributions to this volume explore eleven key developments in the external history of the German language, that is, the combination of social, political and cultural circumstances which influenced the language and its speakers. Some of these 'landmarks' are individuals or groups of people who have exerted influence over the language: Charlemagne, Luther, the early modern grammarians and lexicographers. Others are studies of particular periods, places or groups which have not found their place in more narrative accounts: standardisation in the nineteenth century, the role of Low German, the state of German at the 'Stunde Null' in 1945. An overarching theme is the role of deliberate intervention in the development of German, whether it took the form of education, prescriptivism, purism or political manipulation. The essays, a number of which were originally delivered as lectures in the University of Cambridge and all of which are by specialists in the field, combine to provide a history of the German language in its social context.

Nummulus brattenburgensis and Crania craniolaris

Carnets de Géologie has announced a new English publication:

Article 8 [2009]: Nummulus brattenburgensis and Crania craniolaris (Brachiopoda, Craniidae), by Christian C. EMIG.- Format [HTML] or [PDF 1.590 KB] Reference: [CG2009_A08], 11 p., 8 figs., 1 tabl.

Abstract: The Brattingsborg pennies are mentioned in medieval texts dating from the middle of the first millennium and many popular medieval legends refer to their occurrence on Ivö Island in the Scania region (Sweden) as brattingsborgpenningar or in Latin as Nummulus brattenburgensis. Actually they are valves of the fossil brachiopod Crania craniolaris originally described by Linnaeus (1758) as Anomia craniolaris from the Upper Cretaceous. Later Retzius (1781) created the genus Crania based on these specimens from Ivö Island and on another species he described under Crania (now Isocrania) egnabergensis from Ignaberga in the Scania region. The scientific history of those two species is reviewed along with that of Danocrania tuberculata (Nilsson, 1826), formerly figured as Craniolites brattenburgicus, from the Danian of Scania. Two legends about these "pennies" are included.

Water Scarcity

Water Scarcity - Winter School 2010 on:
Analysing, mapping and evaluating spatio-temporal water scarcity problems
1 – 11 February 2010 in Salzburg, Austria

The international Winter School, organised by the Centre for Geoinformatics deals with topics surrounding the analysis, visualisation and evaluation of spatio-temporal problems related to water scarcity. Delegates learn about current scientific methods and techniques for spatial data acquisition and processing in theory and practise. These methods and techniques methods and techniques can be applied to relevant planning processes in the water sector and in water management. A central focus is placed on learning to implement an early-warning system for water scarcity based on existing operational methods (e.g. Meteorisk) and the associated characterisation of the most important anthropogenically influenced and natural surface waters and groundwater systems.
Information and registration
Registration begins on 1 October and ends on 31 December 2009. We recommend quick registration due to the limited number of places available.

A Low Point in Quarrying for the Rhineland-Palatinate

A new low point in quarrying in the Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany) has been reached with the creation of a new level at the Hahnstätten limestone quarry. On 20 March 2009, a new low point was created in the accessable surface of the Rhineland-Palatinate. The previous lowest point was surpassed when the new level was excavated to 28 m AD (above datum - German: Normalnull). Limestone extraction will continue in the Hahnstätten quarry to 30 m BD (below datum) in the coming years. Of course, exposures exist in current and historical subsurface mining operations that extend to below sea level. Level 25 in the Grube Holzappel mine, for example, reaches 789 m BD.

2 New Publications from Carnets de Géologie

Carnets de Géologie have issued 2 new publications: a memoir in English and a letter in both English & CASTELLANO! I have only published the links to the English versions.

Letter 1 [2009]: Serravallian (Miocene) nannofossils in Patagonia, Argentina, by Margarita SIMEONI. - Format [HTML] or [PDF 689 KB] - Reference: [CG2009_L01]
Abstract: For the first time, nannofossils found in the marine stratigraphic unit named "Patagoniano" which crops out at Cerro Chenque and Cerro Hermitte in southeastern Chubut, Argentina, are documented. They were recovered from pelitic levels in the lower part of coarsening-upward siliciclastic sedimentary sequences. The nannofossils are assigned in part to the Discoaster kugleri Zone NN7 (Martini, 1971) and CN5b (Bukry, 1971, 1973) thus allowing correlation of the productive levels with the Serravallian Stage (upper Middle Miocene).

Note brève 1 [2009] : Nannofossiles du Serravallien (Miocène) de Patagonie, Argentine, par Margarita SIMEONI.- Format [HTML] ou [PDF 689 KB] - Référence : [CG2009_L01]

Memoir 1 [2009]: Mediterranean Neocomian belemnites, part 3: Valanginian-Hauterivian belemnites, by Nico M.M. JANSSEN.- Format [HTML] or [PDF 2,898 KB] - Reference: [CG 2009_M01]
Abstract: The classical papers of Raspail (1829, 1830) and Duval-Jouve (1841) described a wide range of belemnite species, mainly from the Lower Cretaceous of the Castellane-Peyroules area (Alpes de Haute-Provence, France). The present work focuses mainly on the biostratigraphy of these previously described belemnite taxa for their stratigraphic relationships had not been determined precisely. Here, biostratigraphy is related to the lithologic successions and faunal associations (ammonites) of various outcrops in the area studied. Complementary data were obtained from the La Lagne, Les Allaves and Pas d'Escale sections (Alpes de Haute-Provence, France). And, in order to attain a better understanding of the stratigraphic distribution of Late Valanginian belemnites in condensed glauconitic deposits, these assemblages are compared with belemnites from deeper water successions in the Angles, Source de l'Asse de Moriez, Cheiron areas and those in the vicinity of La Charce and Ver gol that are even deeper.

Freeze-dried fossils

Some exceptionally well preserved fossils have been found in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica's Transantarctic Mountains. They include insects, mosses, freshwater shrimps and algae and represent the remains of a tundra ecosystem existing before the big cool began about 14 million years ago. The fossils themselves are 14.07 Ma and are the first to be recovered in this area, even though it already has a 100-year history of exploration. They were discovered by an international research team led by David Marchant, associate professor of earth sciences at Boston Uni and also included Melanie Leng from the UK's NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) Isotopes Geosciences Laboratory. The findings were reported in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The things daughters say

My daughter last night, going to bed, talking to mum:
"Ooh, it's cool in my bedroom tonight. Mammy, can you pull my quilt down a little bit further?"
Mum: "Yes, but why?"
"Then if I grow a bit in the night, my feet won't stick out the bottom and get cold."

Letter 3 [2008]: About the stratigraphic position of the Lower Aptian Roloboceras hambrovi level, by Pierre ROPOLO, Michel MOULLADE, Gabriel CONTE & Guy TRONCHETTI. - Format [HTML] or [PDF 180 KB] - Reference: [CG2008_L03], 7 p., 4 figs.

Abstract: In the stratotype of the Lower Aptian substage the position of the assemblage that includes Roloboceras spp. and Megatyloceras spp. has been clearly established as being in the middle part of the upper Bedoulian. Some authors have erected this horizon as a subzone, or even a zone, with R. hambrovi as species index. In other areas (southern England, eastern Spain, the Ardèche in southeastern France), where taphonomic conditions are not always as favourable as they are in the stratotype, the level at which this assemblage occurs seems to be confined to the upper part of the lower Bedoulian. Various hypotheses are considered in an attempt to explain this divergence.

Memoir 3 [2008]: The Douvilleiceratidae (Ammonoidea) of the Lower Aptian historical stratotype area at Cassis-La Bédoule (SE France), by Pierre ROPOLO, Gabriel CONTE, Michel MOULLADE, Guy TRONCHETTI & Roland GONNET. - Format [HTML] or [PDF 8,685 KB] - Reference: [CG2008_M03], 60 p., 14 figs., 24 pls.

Abstract: Recent biostratigraphic research in the marly limestones of the Cassis-La Bédoule area (SE France) provided a rich macrofauna of Douvilleiceratidae Parona & Bonarelli, 1897. From the uppermost Barremian (Pseudocrioceras waagenoides Subzone) to the middle Aptian (Parahoplites melchioris Zone), specimens of Procheloniceras, Cheloniceras, Roloboceras, Megatyloceras and Epicheloniceras were collected in succession. In this paper we describe the various genera and species from this material and delimit precisely their stratigraphic positions. Our study shows that each genus or subgenus characterizes a discrete stratigraphic interval. In addition, the Cheloniceras meyendorffi, Epicheloniceras debile, Epicheloniceras gracile, and Epicheloniceras buxtorfi subzones, originally defined in England by Casey (1961a), are identified for the first time in the middle Aptian (Gargasian) of the Lower Aptian stratotypic area of Cassis-La Bédoule.
